The Most Purr-fect Way to Embrace a Stray Cat

Congratulations! You've been chosen by the Cat Distribution System (CDS). Don't panic – it's not as mysterious as it sounds. The CDS is simply the informal way cat lovers describe the seemingly magical way felines find their way into our lives. But what do you do when that happens?

Found a Cat or Kitten? Here's Your Action Plan

  1. Assess the Situation:

    • Is the cat friendly? If so, you may be able to approach it.
    • Is it injured or sick? Look for obvious signs like limping, wounds, or discharge.
    • Is it a kitten or an adult? Kittens may need more immediate care.
  2. Safety First:

    • Approach with caution: Even friendly cats can become scared. Speak softly and move slowly.
    • Use a carrier: If possible, coax the cat into a carrier for transport.
    • Protect yourself: Wear gloves if you're unsure of the cat's health or temperament.
  3. Check for Identification:

    • Collar and tag: Look for a tag with contact information.
    • Microchip: Many vets and shelters can scan for a microchip.
  4. Take Action:

    • If the cat is friendly and healthy:
      • Check for lost pet posts: See if anyone is looking for the cat in your neighborhood or online.
      • Foster temporarily: If you can, provide food, water, and shelter while searching for its owner.
    • If the cat is injured, sick, or a kitten:
      • Contact your local animal shelter or rescue: They can provide medical care and find the cat a suitable home.
